Tips on How to Properly Move Your Stuff - Or Let Us Help You!

It’s never easy to move out of your home, no matter how long you’ve been there. Whether it’s an apartment or a house, there’s a lot that goes into a move, physically, mentally and emotionally. Saying goodbye, letting go of items you’ve had for years, and then loading and unloading what’s going with you - it can bring tears to your eyes and pain to your lower back.


With moving being such a transitional period in a person’s life, the last thing someone needs is an injury. With the hope of preventing future injuries, here is a breakdown of what to look out for the next time you’re making the big move.

Strained Back

Back muscles are crucial when lifting heavy objects, and even the most in-shape people can throw out their back if they lift something incorrectly. The best way to avoid such injuries is by using the proper lifting techniques. Here are some tips to save yourself from a strained back:

  1. Don’t bend. Be sure to squat down, and then stand up straight when lifting something, as opposed to bending at the waist.
  2. Brace yourself. A back brace can also be beneficial in avoiding a back injury.
  3. Ask for help. Anything above 50 lbs should be carried by two people or be moved with a hand-truck. This process is made much easier (and safer) when using the services of a professional moving company. 

Smashed Fingers and Toes

These are some of the most common injuries that happen to someone when moving. Sometimes, it feels like you have a decent grip, but all it takes is a tiny slip, and fingers and toes take the damage. Here are some tips that can help you avoid injuring your fingers and toes:

  1. Proper Attire. Wear heavy-duty gloves and proper footwear. Never wear open-toed shoes when moving, but rather go for the closed-toed or steel-toed shoes, which provide great protection.
  2. Be aware. It’s always smart to be aware of one’s surroundings when moving. With all the clutter, piles of boxes, and fragile objects nearby, accidents are more likely.
  3. Don’t overpack. Never pack one box with more than 50 pounds of items. It may seem productive to get more stuff into one box, but it will cause more trouble later. Make the process less painful by packing modestly.

Cuts and Scrapes

Handling glassware and other sharp, breakable objects will inevitably lead to some nasty cuts, some that could be pretty painful and messy. There’s really only one way to best avoid this type of injury: wear the right clothing.  It’s smart to keep as much of your skin covered as possible and wear tough material, like denim. Again, wear those closed-toed shoes; never wear anything like sandals or flip-flops when handling sharp and/or heavy objects. Not only do sandals and flip-flops leave your feet exposed to harm, but they can make you clumsy, increasing the likelihood of tripping or falling. As for your hands, which undergo most of the wear and tear, durable gloves are highly recommended.

Knee Injuries

Knees are some of the most used (and most injured) body parts during a move. After so much heavy and repetitive lifting, knees often get tired and give out. Sometimes, if overworked, the joints can experience permanent damage, even if it’s minor. It’s imperative to take caution and not overdo it, so that even smaller injuries don’t turn into big ones later. If you’re trekking up and down the stairs or squeezing through a narrow doorway, be especially careful, as it’s easy to ram the knees into a wall while carrying heavy items.

Here are some tips and gear that can save your knees from pain and injury:

  1. Brace yourself again. Knee braces are very beneficial when lifting heavy objects, as they support the joints, and supplement for what the knees shouldn’t be pushed to perform.
  2. Slide it. Don’t lift it. Furniture sliders are great tools when moving. These flat surfaces allow you to push your heavy couches and chairs along without scratching up your floors, while saving your knees from a world of hurt.
  3. Dolly up. Similar to the furniture sliders, dollies allow you to move large, heavy objects from Point A to Point B by way of wheels. This method is a lot easier and safer than lifting and carrying alone.

Sprained Ankles

Ankle injuries happen all too easily when moving. Ankles are generally the weakest part of the body, as they’re narrow and carry a full body’s weight. Imagine loading them down even more with a couch or chair. Rolling one’s ankle can happen in a split second and could lead to other injuries, not to mention broken belongings if something goes wrong.

Here are some ways to avoid those dreaded ankle injuries:

  1. Wide Open Spaces. The best way to avoid ankle injuries is to make sure you have a wide enough lane to walk in. Keep things out of the way to minimize potential falls and twisted ankles.
  2. Ankle-supportive shoes. As mentioned earlier, stay away from the open-toed shoes. In this case, go for shoes that support the ankle, like work boots or high-top athletic shoes (like basketball sneakers).
  3. Hire help. No matter what, if you’re doing it yourself, you’re risking injury. The way to avoid any injury for certain is to hire a professional.
